Early Diagnosis is Important in Scoliosis Treatment

Scoliosis, the most common deformity of the spine, is briefly defined as the curvature of the spine to the right or left. It occurs mostly during growth and can be caused by a wide variety of reasons. Although the cause of the majority of cases is unknown, genetics and the developmental characteristics of children are often influential on the disease.

Scoliosis first manifests as a deformity in the back, shoulders or chest. When the disease is at low degrees, very good results can be obtained with physical therapy and exercise, but when it progresses and curvatures form, it may no longer be possible to reverse it. At this stage, it can also cause back and lower back pain and shortness of breath. Scoliosis treatment is organized according to the patient's condition in the form of exercise, traction, casting or bracing, electrical stimulation and surgery. Traction is applied to prevent progression of the deformity. There are various usage procedures depending on the age of the patient and the condition of the scoliosis. Exercises alone may not be enough to stop the progression of scoliosis, but when combined with other methods, they can be successful. It is important for the success of the exercises that the patient knows his/her responsibility and exercises regularly. If the curve is unacceptably large or cannot be corrected by other methods, surgical treatment is necessary.

Updated:Jun 7, 2022, 13:21

This content has been published with the approval of Atakent Health Group Medical Editorial Board.
