What is Obesity?

Obesity can be defined as being overweight or, in other words, having too much body fat mass compared to muscle, bone and fluid.

What are the additional diseases caused by obesity?

Obesity is known to cause CAD hypertension, diabetes, polycystic ovary, joint disorders, herniated disc, colon and breast cancer, depression and many other diseases. For this reason, obesity should be considered as a whole of diseases, a metabolic disease picture.

Is obesity a genetic disease?

In general, eating and drinking habits are behaviors that are learned from childhood by seeing family and environment. Therefore, most of the time, children of overweight parents can also be overweight. Although eating habits, lifestyle and psychological state are at the forefront in obesity, the presence of genetic factors cannot be excluded because in addition to unhealthy nutrition, the metabolic rate of the person and genetic factors are also important. However, if eating, drinking and healthy lifestyle habits are regulated from childhood in people with known genetic predisposition, obesity is prevented as much as possible.

Does obesity affect psychology?

Compared to other people, psychosocial problems such as dissatisfaction with their body structure, low self-esteem, unhappiness in marriage or partnerships, difficulties and difficulties in their work, social and sexual lives are more common in obese people.

What should we do to prevent obesity?

In order to prevent obesity, it is necessary to avoid a healthy and regular diet as well as a sedentary life. We recommend avoiding or limiting the consumption of fast food style foods, foods containing industrial oils, syrups and refined oils as much as possible. Especially eating something at bedtime, snacking on junk food in between, eating irregularly, quickly and more than necessary is an invitation to obesity.

When should you see a doctor?

People who are overweight should consult a doctor to determine whether the cause of their excess weight is due to an irregular diet, a hormonal disorder or another disease. In our age, almost all obesity is related to nutrition, with some exceptions. Nutrition-related overweight should be measured by a specialist doctor and dietician and the degree of the disease should be revealed by determining the VKI.

Which treatment methods are used to get rid of obesity?

Surgical and non-surgical treatment methods are applied in the fight against obesity

Among the methods we call non-surgical dietary aids:

- gastric balloon and gastric botox application,

- Gastric sleeve, gastric bypass are surgical methods

Today, the most effective and permanent treatment of obesity is provided by bariatric surgery. It is both more effective and more permanent than all other methods. Except for exceptional cases, return to old weight is not expected.

In patients who do not meet the surgical criteria or in patients who cannot be treated surgically, gastric balloon is an effective method to help diet in weight loss.

When should surgical methods be preferred to get rid of excess weight?

There are some criteria set by the World Association for Bariatric Surgery for surgical treatment of obesity. These are as follows.

- Body mass index above at least 35 kg/m2 and at least one comorbidity

- Obesity surgery can be performed if the body mass index is above 40 kg/m2.

This is: you must have used or tried a non-surgical treatment (diet, sports, etc.) to lose weight for at least 6 months.

Who can undergo bariatric surgery?

People who meet the weight requirements for bariatric surgery, who are mentally capable of evaluating the results of the surgery, who are not addicted to substances, who do not have a health problem that prevents them from receiving general anesthesia, and who do not have a health problem that prevents them from undergoing bariatric surgery.

What should be considered when deciding on surgery?

When deciding to undergo obesity surgery, the concrete criteria mentioned above must be followed. Apart from these criteria, the person should be determined and sufficiently informed. After obesity surgery, a new period begins almost irreversibly. There will not be many problems caused by obesity. However, the person should not have excessive expectations. There should not be an expectation that every problem will disappear after the surgery. There will be improvements in terms of health problems, but some problems related to environmental communication and social life may be due to reasons other than obesity. Therefore, when making a decision, both the physician and the patient should evaluate well and decide accordingly.

What is Gastric Sleeve Gastrectomy?

Sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical method used in the treatment of obesity. During this surgery, a large part of the stomach is removed and reshaped into a small tube. This helps the person to eat less and lose weight.

Surgery Process:

Gastric sleeve surgery is usually performed laparoscopically. This involves making small incisions and performing the surgery with special instruments. The surgical process usually includes the following steps:

1. The patient is put to sleep under general anesthesia

2. 4 or 5 small incisions are made in the abdomen and laparoscopic instruments are used to access the stomach.

3. Most of the stomach, almost 80%, is removed and reshaped into a tube.

4. The small incisions are closed and the procedure is finished.

Potential Results:

After sleeve gastrectomy, individuals often describe the following results:

- Faster weight loss and long-term weight control

- Signs of improvement in obesity-related health problems such as diabetes and hypertension

- Feelings of more energy and increased quality of life

Conclusion

Gastric sleeve surgery is an effective option in the fight against obesity, but like any surgery, you should consider the risks and benefits. You should consult a specialist doctor to determine a suitable surgical method. Gastric balloons can be performed in a light sleep state called sedation.
