Psychiatry
What is Psychiatry?
Psychiatry (mental health) is a branch of medicine that deals with the examination, identification, classification, treatment and protection of disorders in people's mental and emotional abilities, behaviors and adaptation to the environment.
Psychiatry has been making great use of biology (especially neurobiology), genetics, pharmacology, and radiological imaging methods in recent years. It continues to develop by making use of units such as psychology, anthropology and sociology as well as medical units.
Like the history of medicine, the history of psychiatry is as old as humanity. Hippocrates argued that mental illness is due to natural factors, not supernatural forces. We can find examples of the approach in ancient times in the temple of Aesclapion in Pergamon. While various therapy methods were applied to the patients here, their bodies were rested with mud baths and sleep.
Psychic patients were subjected to extermination or terrible punishments in the Middle Ages. With the Enlightenment, the foundations of contemporary psychiatry began to be laid, and nursing homes and treatment methods began to be developed.
The approach to mental illnesses in Turkey has been more tolerant, and some of the hospitals that have been opened are reserved for these patients. First, a mental hospital was opened in Istanbul during the Ottoman period, and examples can be seen in Edirne and Manisa today. Contemporary psychiatry started in Turkey with Mazhar Osman.
After six years of medical education, those who are successful in the examination held after five years of assistantship in Medical Faculties or Training and Research Hospitals that provide education in this field with the Specialization exam in Medicine can work as a Psychiatrist.
