Anesthesia and Reanimation

Anesthesiologists are the most important part of the operating room team, even their secret heroes. Because it is not possible to start the operation without giving anesthesia to the patient. The drugs used to prevent the patient from feeling pain during the surgery are determined and applied by the anesthesia and reanimation physician. It is also the most important responsibility of the anesthesiologist to minimize some negative effects of anesthesia on the human body and to ensure that the patient wakes up after the operation without affecting his vital functions.

The state of temporary loss of consciousness and reflex, decrease in activity without a change in vital functions is called general anesthesia. General anesthesia application; It causes loss of consciousness, prevents the patient's awareness during the operation, provides comfort to the patient during the operation by eliminating the pain, and facilitates the surgical intervention by suppressing reflex activity and providing muscle relaxation. With these effects, the aim of general anesthesia is to provide appropriate surgical conditions. However, it is also the duty of the anesthesiologist to maintain the health and safety of the patient during the operation.

Anesthesia application can be applied by doctors who have had anesthesia and reanimation specialization training on medical education. Anesthesia technicians, who are trained to assist anesthesiologists throughout the surgery, are also a very important part of the anesthesia team.

Patients are usually given an oral medication called “premedication” to help them come to the operating room more easily. First of all, the vascular access of the patient who is taken to the operating room is opened. The patient is then monitored to monitor vital functions such as heart, respiration and blood pressure. After these preparations, only special drugs authorized by the anesthesiologist for general anesthesia are administered to the patient through the serum inserted. A special tube is placed in the trachea for respiratory tract continuity and safety. After providing a safe depth of anesthesia, the operation can be started with the permission of the anesthesiologist. Continuity of anesthesia is provided by the combination or separate administration of respiratory and intravenous drugs. Following the end of the operation, the anesthetic drugs used are terminated, and the patient is awakened under the supervision of an anesthesiologist and taken to the recovery room. The patient is warmed here, his pain is relieved, and the patient is sent to his room comfortably, taking precautions against nausea and vomiting.

How Many Types of Anesthesia Are There?
General Anesthesia

If the patient is completely unconscious under anesthesia, it is called "General Anesthesia". Many drugs are used for general anesthesia. As these are drugs given to the vein, there are also gases used with oxygen. The necessary drugs are selected according to the characteristics of each patient. Ether, which was widely used in the past and identified with anesthesia, has not been used in recent years; giving much better resultsIt has been left to other drugs developed with modern medical technology.

Regional Anesthesia

A part of the body; (arm, leg, chest, etc.) anesthetizing by injection is called "Regional Anesthesia". There are varieties such as spinal, epidural and nerve block.

Local Anesthesia

In minor surgical interventions, only the part of the intervention is anesthetized. Your doctor who will perform the operation can perform the numbing procedure, but your anesthesiologist will still be with you when your vital functions need to be monitored or sedated.

Your Anesthesiologist and You Usually, while the anesthetist is working, the patient is asleep and does not know what he is doing and how he is helping him. It is always with you, including before and after the surgery.

Before Surgery

It examines your health status. He will visit you in your room, tell you what to do and answer your questions. Suggests the examination, treatment and care that he/she wants to be done. Before the anaesthesia, he will give you the drugs you need. According to the results of the examinations and your disease, it chooses the most appropriate anesthesia method for you.

During the Surgery

It gives the necessary medicines to prevent you from feeling pain in the surgery, checks the regular functioning of your heart and lungs, makes the necessary treatments for these and other organs to work well, and gives serum, blood and other drugs.

You are unaware of all these works that your anesthetist does to make the surgeon's job easier and to keep you alive in surgery!

Your anesthetist is with you throughout the operation and is your closest protector, the keeper of your entire being. With your anesthetist at your head, your surgeon knows that your care is in safe hands, and gives his full attention to his own work.

After Surgery

The anesthetist is in charge of not only putting you to sleep, but also waking you up. Another important job of his is to prepare and have the necessary care and treatments applied so that you can get rid of the effects of the drugs you take during the surgery, not feel pain after the surgery, and stay healthy. In recent years, post-operative pain is relieved by an anesthetist with a method under your control (patient-controlled analgesia). All these show that anesthesia, which is administered by people with sufficient knowledge under appropriate conditions, is an extremely safe practice that will ensure your comfort during the operation and, more importantly, your tolerance for the operation. Anesthesiologist doctors take an active and primary role in this field, as well, due to their experience in relieving pain during surgery. With many developed methods, it is possible to control post-operative acute pain, painless delivery and treatment of chronic pain that cannot be relieved.
