Fibromyalgia Syndrome Can Be Confused With Winter Fatigue

Symptoms such as fatigue, pain and waking up tired, which are more common in the winter months, are generally thought to be caused by cold weather. Although this is partly true, it should not be neglected because it is similar to the symptoms of fibromyalgia syndrome.

Fibromyalgia is a common rheumatism that causes widespread pain. The pain is mostly concentrated in the lumbar and neck regions. In addition to pain, patients also complain of fatigue, weakness, sweating, chills, numbness, stomach pain, painful menstruation, dry eyes and mouth, sleep disturbance and a tired start to the day. Symptoms that increase due to seasonal transitions and cold weather also cause loss of workforce. Patients often consult different specialty doctors with complaints of increased pain, but this causes both a waste of time and an increase in the patient's health problem.

Fibromyalgia can be seen in all ages and genders, although most of them are women. People with any rheumatologic, viral or bacterial disease and those with psychiatric problems are at risk for fibromyalgia. It is more common in people with depression and high anxiety. Symptoms must persist for three months for patients to be diagnosed with fibromyalgia. There is no single treatment for the disease. The disease should be treated with a multidisciplinary program that includes a personalized exercise program, physical therapy, massage and regular diet, as well as medication to relieve pain and fatigue. Psychiatric support may also be provided if necessary.

To prevent fibromyalgia syndrome, it is important to dress appropriately for the weather conditions, avoid stuffy and smoking environments, avoid stress, eat a healthy diet, balance work and rest hours, organize your working environment according to your anatomy, and prefer sports that suit you.

Updated:Jun 6, 2022, 17:10

This content has been published with the approval of Atakent Health Group Medical Editorial Board.
