It is Possible to Reduce Loss of Function Due to Parkinson's Disease

Parkinson's disease is a chronic nervous system disorder caused by the deterioration of certain centers in brain tissue. The disease, which occurs when the body's balance is disturbed, such as tremors in the body and slow movement, is more common with advancing age. Parkinson's disease shows symptoms such as slow walking, dragging the feet on the ground when walking, body leaning forward, depression, depressed mood, muscle aches, slurred speech, hoarse and dull speech, arms not swinging when walking, sweating, hypotension (low blood pressure) and difficulty swallowing. A comprehensive physical therapy and rehabilitation program should be applied to patients who start drug treatment upon diagnosis.

The aim of Parkinson's rehabilitation is to improve the patient's joint movements, eliminate balance and gait disorders, reduce tremors and stiffness in the arms and legs, improve activities of daily living, correct speech impairment and improve general fitness. Within the scope of rehabilitation, relaxation exercises, range of motion exercises, aerobic exercises, respiratory exercises, strengthening exercises, balance and coordination exercises are applied according to the characteristics of the patient. If patients are followed up at regular intervals and practice the exercises they have learned at home, they can continue their lives in a largely independent and safe manner.

Updated:Jun 7, 2022, 13:15

This content has been published with the approval of Atakent Health Group Medical Editorial Board.
