What You Should Know About Genital Warts

GENITAL HERPES

Molluscum contagiosum, which is similar to genital warts, are benign lesions located on the face in children and HIV (AIDS virus) infected people and mostly in the genital area in normal adults. Apart from sexual intercourse, it can also be transmitted from person to person through direct body contact and shared use of contaminated towels. They are typically small, pink-white lesions with a pinkish-white center, which when squeezed release a cheesy substance.

What You Should Know About Genital Warts

When it comes to genital warts, the first thing that comes to mind is the human wart virus (Human Papilloma Virus: HPV), which is responsible for most of them. Most sexually active people are reported to be infected with HPV at least once in their lifetime and most infections are self-limited and asymptomatic or unknown in developed country populations.

Genital warts are classified as sexually transmitted infections. They are localized in the genital organs. In men it settles on the skin of the genital area and in women on the vulva, vagina, uterine cervix and skin of the genital area.

It is diagnosed by examination. It is usually asymptomatic. Depending on their size and location, warts can be painful or itchy.

There is treatment for genital warts, but not for the virus itself. Asymptomatic or mild genital HPV infection typically resolves spontaneously. Specific antiviral treatment is not recommended to eradicate HPV infection.

What You Should Know About the Treatment of Genital Warts

The aim of treatment is to remove the wart and relieve symptoms if present. If left untreated, warts may regress spontaneously, remain unchanged or increase in number and size. There is no single ideal treatment for all patients or for all warts. Recommended are ointments recommended by the dermatologist, cryotherapy or surgical removal of the wart (including curettage, laser or electrosurgery) or treatment with acid solutions.

The indication for cesarean section in pregnant women with HPV infection is only in cases of pelvic tract obstruction or if vaginal delivery would cause excessive bleeding.

Protection against HPV warts is based on the strategy of protection against sexually transmitted infections. There is a vaccine for HPV. Since it is vaccine-preventable, people at risk should be vaccinated before contact; sexual partners of infected people should also be evaluated, treated and educated.

Updated: 26.03.2022, 17:26

This content has been published with the approval of Atakent Health Group Medical Editorial Board.
